We are very pleased to be able to publish our new tool ‘A Guide to Decarbonisation’, a project commissioned from Arup. Every AUDE member university knows that decarbonisation of the estate sits high on the institutional task list, but it can seem daunting in terms of both cost and process. Where do we start? How do we finance the multiple sub-projects involved, and schedule them into a coherent plan of action that aligns with corporate strategy? How do we prioritise between the options available to us and consider our own unique position as universities in the decisions we make?

AUDE has published its annual Higher Education Estates Management Report (‘the EMR’) 2023, using data from August 2021 to July 2022. It is the best and most considered analysis that UK universities have to help them make the right long-term strategic decisions about their estates. Estates Directors use the report to benchmark estates activity, and for the facts and accurate data that support the biggest choices about future investment. With the publication of the new 'Cost of Net Zero' report and accompanying cost calculator tool, university estates directors not only have a means to calculate the overall likely cost of bringing the estate to net zero carbon, but a checklist of the kinds of activity that will need to be prioritised. As society changes we must lead that change, for instance in our support for lower carbon cost transport, electrification and the decarbonisation of the electricity supply. For those who haven’t yet started down this path, this is a good place to start, including for those who don’t want the expense of external consultancy support. For those that already have a map of where they are going and how much it will costs them this will help them sense check along the way.
